Building My doTERRA Business – 10 Tips I Wish I Had Known
Building my doTERRA business is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I’ve learned many lessons along the way. Here are the top ten tips I wish I had known when I started building my doTERRA business.

Get Started Sharing Essential Oils Right Away
First, I wish I had known to get started right away building my doTERRA business. I was shy about sharing my love of essential oils. Because I was afraid, I pushed many opportunities away. I thought people would call me silly. I worried about how I smelled! Would the aroma be a turn-off? Eventually, all the compliments about how amazing I smelled wearing my doTERRA Lavender oil got through. My constant essential oil successes got me sharing.
I wish that I had started building my doTERRA business on day one.
Schedule Regular Classes
When I started, I didn’t realize how important a regular class schedule is. I took it a bit personally when my “once in a great while” classes didn’t fit into people’s schedules. I thought “They just don’t want to come.” Or even, “I don’t think they really like me.”
Not true at all! Many contacts connected with me later in one on one appointments. If I had set a regular class schedule, and stuck with it, right from the start, it would have been easier. With a regular and set schedule, people begin to anticipate essential oil classes. A regular class schedule lets your intended guests plan ahead.
And if you take your classes online with Epic Facebook parties, you will find it even easier to overcome potential hostess objections. Everyone loves learning about the oils online in a Facebook party. These days, my customers don’t even need to leave their comfy couch to attend an online Facebook oil class in my group.
Build Momentum With Your Business
I wish I had understood the importance of building momentum in my doTERRA business. I now think of it as rolling a snowball into a big snowman. You roll a little bit and can feel discouraged. Then what happens? If you give up, you will never build your snowman! Keep on rolling. And then roll some more. Eventually, the snowball begins to gain momentum!
When building your doTERRA essential oil business, momentum is key. When your momentum is strong, your excitement is high. Excitement is contagious! I didn’t find builders until I had my momentum going strongly. Momentum attracts success when you are leading a doTERRA team.
Maintain Momentum Building My doTERRA Business
Once you have the momentum going, it’s critical to not stall. I’ve stalled myself at this point… several times. That’s kind of embarrassing to admit, actually! But the point of this blog post is for you to learn from my mistakes! If you have the momentum and excitement going, you can’t quit. Because if you quit, your doTERRA business won’t maintain itself. You have to start over. It’s so hard to start over. Keep that momentum strong once you’ve built it up! This is a lesson I wish I learned sooner. If you’re struggling, remember your emotional essential oils – they are there to support you on your business journey, too!
Include Your Spouse In doTERRA
This may not apply to everyone. However, I wish I included my husband sooner in doTERRA. I started to talk to him about my doTERRA business. First, I began just bouncing ideas around. I quickly realized that he has a gift for the business end!
Next, I got him his very own set of oils for his work travels. As he used the oils, he believed in them. Jason now shares essential oils right along with me. Had I been more open with him about this wonderful opportunity, I know we would have made more progress, faster.
Even if they do not actively share, support from your spouse is valuable. There are many different ways for someone to support your business.
Be Specific When Reaching Out To Upline
I tried at various points to reach out to my upline but became frustrated. She never ignored me or anything like that. Instead, it was a communication issue on my part. I struggled with being specific in letting her know the areas I needed help. I’ve learned to reach out with exact questions. instead of vague requests with no focus. My upline cannot read my mind. And neither can yours! I now say clearly, “I need help understanding ___ to help me with ____”. I no longer feel frustrated. And she knows exactly how to respond. Becoming clear in requests for help allows upline to help me better.
Always Carry Samples
I always have my oils on me. However, I didn’t use to carry the little sample bottles to give out. Once I put a few of those in my purse, it became easier to share. I wish I had realized that right from the start.
It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? So many times I missed opportunities. I was eagerly sharing my own successes, but not offering samples for them to try for themselves! You never know when someone might need a little bit of your Petitgrain oil on a stressful day! Always carry samples, and be brave enough to share them. They might say no, and that’s okay. Because they might also say YES!
Start A Blog For My doTERRA Business
Blogging is something I can do even on my bad days. I wish I had known that sooner. I stalled in building my doTERRA business because of my health challenges. Now? I can keep right on blogging no matter how yucky I feel. There is no pressure on my blog, I’m in full control. My blog brings me contacts almost daily. Those contacts eventually turn into customers! I wish I had started blogging from day one. I’ve always loved to write.
Believe In Yourself And Our Business Opportunity
I wish I had believed in myself more from the start. The earnings opportunity is easier to believe in as you start to earn money. I never really believed until I started earning income. I believed in the potential, but that was different from being all in.
Believing in myself and fully believing in the opportunity brought a new level of determination. I wish I had that confidence in myself right from the start. I knew this was a financial opportunity, I just didn’t believe in my own judgment enough to share with confidence. Believe in yourself and your business opportunity. This will carry you far.
If you’re struggling with self confidence, you could think about personal business coaching. I adore the ladies over at Sassy Suite, and give them a lot of credit for my budding self confidence in myself and my doTERRA Business.
You Can’t Fail At A doTERRA Business
I saved the best for last. The amazing thing, that I most wish I had known. You can’t fail at this! Even though I missed opportunities. And I kind of messed up several times. I still didn’t fail completely. I’m still a success at building my doTERRA business.
We have an amazing product in our pure essential oils. Even when I quit entirely for a few months at a time, I didn’t lose everything. My loyal customers continued to buy oils month after month. That is amazing, and a large part of the reason you won’t fail at building a doTERRA business. Once you’ve tried these oils, you’re in love.
The other reason you won’t fail at your doTERRA business? You have me. I believe in you. You’ve got this. Even at your worst, even when you fail… you are still going to be failing forward.
