Which doTERRA Oils Require Dilution?

Some doTERRA oils require dilution. The topic of diluting essential oils can be a confusing one. There are actually only a handful of doTERRA essential oils that always require dilution for topical use. They are often referred to as hot oils.
What Are Hot Oils?
Hot essential oils are oils that could cause discomfort when used on the skin without a carrier oil. Once diluted with a carrier oil, hot oils are incredibly beneficial. You don’t need to avoid using them as they have many wonderful benefits. However, to use them safely, dilute first with a carrier oil! 9 doTERRA oils require dilution, and are considered hot oils.
What Is A Carrier Oil & What Does It Do?
There are a variety of carrier oils available. The most common carrier oil is fractionated coconut oil. You could even use olive oil or another vegetable oil if you didn’t have coconut oil on hand.
Carrier oils do not affect how well an essential oil works, but they slow the absorption rate. A carrier oil could even increase the effectiveness of an essential oil for some instances, such as allowing the oil to be spread over a larger area of the body. Carrier oils have fatty molecules which slow how quickly the essential oil is absorbed into the skin.
Diluting Essential Oils For Children
I advise using your best judgment when using essential oils with children. I do use oils with my own children. They are ages 6 and 4. I have comfortably used doTERRA with them since we first discovered oils. My son was just a few months old at that time. Children have sensitive skin, and when in doubt, I would dilute. I tend to dilute at a heavier dilution for my children. We use a big kitchen Tablespoon to measure the carrier oil. And just add 3 or 4 drops of essential oil to that amount.
