Leadership qualities are a must have to succeed in direct sales. Have you ever asked yourself “How can I be a good direct sales leader?” As I’ve stepped into the role of a doTERRA mentor, I’ve often asked the same thing. No one ever feels like a good leader. If you have even a few qualities of leadership, you are a better team leader than you thought!
Direct Sales Leadership Quality #1: Show Up
Of the many leadership qualities, this is perhaps most important. Direct sales leaders show up. You always show up for your appointments. Your daily to-do list is a priority. And you are there for your direct sales team. Leaders hold themselves accountable to be present. If you can be depended on to simply be there, you have a crucial quality of leadership.
Direct Sales Leadership Quality #2: Do The Brave Thing
The thing is, no one ever feels like doing the brave thing. True fact? I’ve taught tons of doTERRA classes. “It gets easier, right?” Wrong! I still get butterflies and nerves before each essential oil class. Every time, I’m afraid. But I do the brave thing. And I teach anyway. Being a direct sales leader means you still do it, even though you are scared. You make the phone call, you teach a team training when you feel like you aren’t qualified. Whatever your fear, you face it and rise. Doing the brave thing shines in those with leadership qualities.
Direct Sales Leadership Quality #3: Honesty & Transparency
Honesty and transparency may not be talked about much as good leadership qualities, but they are vital. Leaders who are honest and transparent gain trust from team and customers alike. Our team will follow what we do. How can they follow if we are not allowing them to see our roadmap? Team members may not follow our map exactly. They weave their own path, as they should! But an honest and transparent leader will guide her downline by example. Honest leaders own up to mistakes and fix them. Transparent leaders show that in spite of bumps and detours, this can be done. As you can see, both leadership qualities matter!
Direct Sales Leadership Quality #4: A Big Vision
A big vision is important to have when using direct sales as your vehicle to financial freedom. Success in direct sales won’t come overnight. True leaders recognize that from the start. A leader decides, “I am in this for the long haul.” Because they have a big vision, leaders look at the long view.
Direct Sales Leadership Quality #5: Leaders Help Others
This is one of the most admirable qualities in great direct sales leaders. They seek to help others. A company leader recognizes that helping others, ultimately, helps everyone.
Direct Sales Leadership Quality #6: Work Hard
In the interest of transparency and honesty as an emerging doTERRA leader, this is hard work. That doesn’t mean it’s not worthwhile. It is 1000% worthwhile. But every leader will find herself working many long hours with her eye on the long term reward. In the beginning, it may feel like “hard work” is all there is. But a leader simply does the work, and they work hard. We put in the hours, we track down the leads, we stay up late at night. Success doesn’t come unless we work hard.
Direct Sales Leadership Quality #7: A Drive To Succeed
A true direct sales leader is driven to succeed. She has some reason or passion that simply will not let her quit. It may be financial. Maybe the business simply fills some emotional need. Passion for the product can even drive a person to succeed at direct sales! Once I tried doTERRA essential oils, I felt that I simply had to share them! My desire to help others with oils drives me to succeed. Put that in combination with my financial goals, and I simply won’t quit. The drive could literally be anything, but every strong direct sales leader has one.
Direct Sales Leadership Quality #8: Team Rises With You
A great direct sales leader causes her team to rise with her. It is inevitable! Your team rises because they are following what you do as a leader. You are the trendsetter and the pathfinder blazing the way to success. And of course, your team comes with you. Leaders treasure and nurture team members. I would do anything for my own direct sales team. Their success is my success! True direct sales leaders model a strong team culture which helps everyone succeed. Great leaders are often great simply because they take action when others don’t. Full disclosure here. A little over a year ago, I hit a point where I was stuck with my doTERRA business. Why? I wasn’t taking action. Fear keep me from taking the leap to the next level. What was the next level? Team leadership. Over the past year, I experienced a mindset shift. I no longer fear action, but embrace it. Action leads to success in my direct sales business with doTERRA. Every day, I have an agenda and action steps I take. Every leader does the same, in their own way. Taking action means creating goals, and then doing what it takes to meet them.

In conclusion, strong direct sales leaders seek growth. Self-improvement, growing your team, raising the bar on personal and team volume. Without growth, you cannot succeed as a direct sales leader. Growth comes when we seek it. Leaders are constantly stretching themselves to reach new levels. To go a little further.
