What Is Success In Direct Sales?
What IS success in direct sales, anyways?
Have you ever wondered what it takes to have success in direct sales? First, you’d need to answer this question for yourself. The answer won’t be the same for everyone. Here’s why.
Having success in direct sales comes down to what your OWN definition of success is.
How Do You Define Success?
A series of events today, got me thinking about success. I was wondering about this. What IS success in direct sales, anyway?
Because how do you define success? It’s individual to each person. To one person, success might be hitting the top ranks of the company. To another, she just wants to meet new friends and uses her direct sales gig as a vehicle. As long as they are each achieving their goals – what does it matter how one person defines success over another? Just more proof that the comparison trap doesn’t exist. You don’t need to fear success, because you get to define what it means!
Success In Direct Sales
BUT… often in direct sales (I’m totally guilty of this!), we can begin to define our success by a certain rank, the next rank advancement, or even an income goal. Or by how many people attended a party, …or how many people didn’t (that’s a yucky feeling – but it’s still a success, because I bet you learned something from it in order to have a better turn out next time!)
And there’s always this push towards “the next thing, the next rank, the next big goal”. But here’s the thing.
You don’t have to wait until you reach those end goals, in order to feel, and to BE successful. Right here, where you are already.
How I Define Success In Direct Sales
Here’s what got me thinking about how we define success in direct sales. Today I had a weird series of events. I woke up to a new enrollment on my team (thank you Pinterest!). Then as I was doing some follow ups, a different team member who is in Puerto Rico was sharing some of her situation there. Her family is directly impacted by the earthquakes, and they are living outside in tents.
Talk about a high, followed by a low. I was in tears talking to my team member in Puerto Rico. And I spent a lot of the day today, helping her figure out how to set up a fundraiser through doTERRA for her family and surrounding area, and directing her through the corporate channels to get doTERRA relief kits with small hygiene items in them, sent to her area.
But through the sad feelings, it still felt good to be further along the line, in order to reach back and help. This is part of having success with direct sales.
I’m not at the rank goal I want to be, I haven’t hit my highest vision of success… but just maybe… I’m already here. Because if I wasn’t HERE, I couldn’t have helped her today. It’s all mindset, isn’t it?
Maybe my truest definition of success has nothing to do with a rank, or income level… and everything to do with helping people behind me on the line.
The Mindset Of Direct Sales Success
Then (remember, it was a weird day…), my thoughts shifted to the mindset of direct sales success. And how we can get stuck in this negative loop – I used to be so guilty of this! But one way to break the loop – when you’re having a bad day, when things all seem against you, or it feels like people don’t understand… is to sit down, and count the successes you ALREADY have.
And you DO have successes with your direct sales business. I want to HEAR ABOUT THEM!!! So tell me – what success have you had lately? This is a positive mindset action you can take at any time.
- Were you the glue that help your family together today. Being the glue is HARD and also exhausting. Give yourself credit, and stay positive.
- Did you help someone, in any way at all, who is behind you on the line?
- Maybe you shared your insight on a topical group post on Facebook!
- Or you supported a friend’s business to help change the perception of direct sales
- Did you crush your last Facebook party theme?
- Were you brave? Maybe you tried something new!
- Or maybe you did a rock star thing, and those feel pretty awesome too. As long as you aren’t defining your whole idea of success around them.
- Maybe you’re a direct sales leader, and helped someone on your team today.
Success is all about your mindset. Once you sort out that you ARE a success, even if you have further to go for your end goal, it changes everything.
