Why Should I Use Essential Oils?
But first, are you wondering “Why should I use essential oils?” There are so many essential oils benefits for you to explore! As a family, we use the oils for everything from immune support, respiratory support, keeping our tummies healthy, uplifting mood, and MORE!
What Are The Four Ways To Use Essential Oils?
The four ways to use essential oils are by inhaling them, aromatically in an essential oil diffuser, topically, or internally. Next, I will explain how you can use essential oils in each of the four ways. Are you ready?
Use Essential Oils By Inhaling Them
The easiest way for you to use essential oils is by inhaling them. You can smell right from the bottle! Or I like to put a drop of essential oil in my hands, rub my hands together, cup over my nose, and breathe in the aroma. As an example, I often need respiratory support through my busy day. When I’m on the go, inhaling essential oils such as doTERRA Breathe and Eucalyptus is a must!
There are many benefits of inhaling essential oils! Inhaling essential oils is convenient and safe. You might inhale essential oils for a quick mood lift, or to support your respiratory system on the go, for example. Pregnant women can inhale the aroma of ginger oil to calm a queasy tummy!
Use Essential Oils Aromatically With A Diffuser
Have you ever wondered how to use essential oils to scent a room? The answer is using essential oils aromatically with a diffuser! Essential oil diffusers get your oils into the air so you can enjoy the therapeutic benefits. The diffuser outputs a mist that you breathe in as you go about your day. You can learn how to use your essential oils diffuser in this video.
If you are wondering how much essential oil to use in your diffuser, there is no hard and fast rule. Ready-made essential oil diffuser blends do the work for you. Or you can use about 5-6 drops of your favorite oil.
Health Benefits Of Using Essential Oils Aromatically
Far more than a beautiful fragrance, when you use your essential oils aromatically with a diffuser, you cleanse and purify the air, and enjoy myriad physical and emotional benefits! The benefits of diffusing essential oils include, but are not limited to:

Use Essential Oils Topically On Skin
Now we are going to talk about how you can use essential oils on skin, or topically. But can you put essential oils on your skin? Absolutely! Pure essential oils are quickly absorbed by your skin and travel through your bloodstream.
How Do I Use Essential Oils On Skin?
Here’s how to use essential oils on your skin. Open your bottle of essential oil. Tip it gently to drip out just a drop or two of essential oil into your hand. Or put the essential oil directly on the skin where you want the oil to go. Gently rub the essential oil into your skin. And then you will simply enjoy the benefits of your oils from this simple practice!
Essential Oil Dilution For Using Oils On Skin
To be sure that you are using essential oils safely, I want to mention essential oil dilution. Often you are fine to apply the essential oil directly to the skin, also known as “neat” essential oil usage. But some essential oils are considered “hot”. You need to dilute ALL hot oils with a carrier oil before applying directly to your skin. This is done with a tablespoon of carrier oil. I discuss hot oils in my blog post “WHICH DOTERRA OILS REQUIRE DILUTION?“.
And I always dilute ALL essential oils for very young children and the elderly. Their skin is too delicate for neat essential oil usage. Once diluted, apply your oils to the desired area as usual.
Using Essential Oils On Your Feet
Sometimes I am asked how to apply essential oils to feet. It’s the same as described above, just a few drops (2-3) will work for the whole foot. First, drip out the oil. Next, gently rub the oils into your feet, and enjoy the benefits of topical usage. The oils will quickly absorb into the skin on your feet and travel through your bloodstream to benefit your whole body. This process takes place in just seconds!
Now that you know how to apply essential oils topically, I’ll discuss the last method, internal usage. Isn’t essential oil usage so interesting?
Use Essential Oils Internally
Internal usage of essential oils is the most powerful way to use your essential oils. However, not all essential oils are safe for ingestion. Be careful of the brands you choose to use. Personally, I am only comfortable ingesting doTERRA oils, because I can verify where the oil comes from through Source To You.
Only Use Essential Oils Internally If There Is A Supplement Facts Label
This is an important essential oil safety note. NOT all essential oils are created equally. And not all essential oils (even with a reputable brand, such as doTERRA) are intended for internal usage. So how is an essential oil beginner to understand the difference?
There is an easy way to know which essential oils are safe for internal use! Simply look at the label on your essential oil bottle. Does it have supplement facts on it? Supplement facts will look just like the label on your food. Having a supplement facts label means this is an okay essential oil to ingest! If there are no supplement facts, don’t use that oil internally.
How Do I Use Essential Oils Internally?
Last, but not least! I’m going to share how you can use essential oils internally. There are a few different methods. Simply choose which works best for you at the time!
- Put 1 drop under your tongue
- Place 3-5 drops in an empty capsule (known as a veggie cap)
- Add 2 drops in a glass of water, juice, or milk
- Or add a drop to a spoonful of honey
- Make an essential oil tea
- Add a small amount of essential oil to food as a flavoring
Choose your essential oil ingestion method, and use as directed above. I don’t suggest ingesting many essential oils at once. A small amount, spaced out by a few hours, is a more effective way to ingest essential oils.
And That’s How To Use Essential Oils Four Different Ways!
